National Trust Properties in London

w-home_title1.gifLooking for a National Trust house to visit this weekend, I naturally started searching in Kent, Surrey and Sussex (I live in south east London these days) before thinking ‘countryside? bah! What’s wrong with London?’ And though National Trust Properties in London are thinner on the ground there are some really nice little surprises. Barking doesn’t immediately spring to mind for a family day out, but check out Eastbury Manor House, a fine Elizabethan merchant’s house and gardens. Further into Essex, and there is the early 18th century Rainham Hall. We have a couple in and around Chelsea in the Blewcoat School (now the National Trust shop) and Thomas Carlyle’s House, while Hampstead has a nice contrast in the 17th century merchant’s home of Fenton House, and the resolutely modern 2 Willow Road … hated by Ian Fleming, loved by architecture students! A personal favourite is the George Inn at Borough as it is, yes, a pub … London’s last surviving galleried boozer I believe. Very handy for London Bridge Station.
